Unlike when our medical colleagues see patients, all dental patients have to take off their masks to be seen. In addition, many dental procedures generate aerosol, increasing the potential risk of virus transmission. Therefore, we must employ every tool at our disposal to keep our patients, our staff and their families safe during the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to universal precautions, we use temperature screening, additional protective equipment, mandatory mask use and extensive air filtration. We have also modified our waiting room, patient flow, and room turnover to reduce exposure between patients.
As COVID-19 continues to be present throughout our community, we have decided for the safety of our patients and our staff to recommend pre-dental visit COVID testing for patients who need to take off their masks to be seen for evaluation or treatment.
How this works (please read carefully):
Helix Diagnostics Lab, working in conjunction with the Washtenaw County Health Department, has set up drive up testing (you stay in car the whole time!) for the dental community and our patients. HelixMDx uses an RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction) COVID-19 test that tests at 40-45 cycles of PCR, which is a very sensitive test, to help reduce the risk of a false-negative result. A false-negative result means that the test shows a negative result even though the person tested actually is infected with COVID-19.

GUIDELINES ON WHEN TO GO TEST
You should be tested 2-3 days prior to your scheduled dental appointment.
Testing hours are as follows: Monday – Friday from 7AM – 3PM

We will receive your test results and he will give you your result on arrival to the office (or sooner if you test positive for the COVID-19 virus).
Changes we have made to our office:
We have added 7 high-quality HEPA air filtration units to our office to help clean and turn over room air using MERV 19 filters.
We have also added iWave-C with Needle Point Bi-Polar Ionization to help purify the air in our suite along with a Merv 12 filter in our HVAC system.
Our clinical staff will be wearing either N95 or KN95 masks, which have been properly fit-tested when we are caring for you.
We have added sneeze guards at the front office.
We monitor all staff and patients for elevated temperature and symptoms upon arrival.
We allow an extended period of time between patients to increase sterilization time and allow multiple cycle of room air turnover via our purifiers and HVAC systems.
WHEN IT IS TIME FOR YOUR VISIT:
- Please arrive a few minutes early for your appointment and please wait in your car. Please call us to let us know you have arrived for your appointment and please make sure that we have your cell phone number.
- We will call you when it is time for you to come in to be seen. We are no longer having people wait in the reception area due to the pandemic.
- Please do not bring anyone with you to your appointment unless you are not able to come by yourself.
- If you are sick with any of the symptoms:
- Fever or chills
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Muscle or body aches
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
Please stay home and call your physician, then call us to reschedule.
Also, if you have been exposed to anyone who has COVID-19, we will need to postpone your appointment until you have been tested and shown to be COVID-19 free by your physician.
